Spaced repetition for kids: the gentle science of remembering
What spaced repetition is, why it works for primary school learners, and how to use it without turning every evening into a study session.

Spaced repetition sounds like jargon, but the idea is delightfully simple. If you want something to stick, review it at gradually expanding intervals: today, in two days, in a week, in three weeks. Each successful recall makes the memory stronger and the next review can wait longer.
Why it works
Our brains evolved to forget. Forgetting is a feature, not a bug. The brain decides what to keep based on what it sees again before it disappears. Reviewing a fact just as it is about to fade gives the strongest signal that this thing matters, so the brain promotes it from short term to long term storage.
What it looks like at the kitchen table
You do not need an app. A small stack of paper flashcards split into three piles works beautifully. Pile one is reviewed every day, pile two every three days, pile three every week. When a card is recalled correctly, it moves down a pile. When it is missed, it moves back up to pile one. Five minutes a day is plenty for a child under ten.
What to put on the cards
- Times tables that consistently trip them up.
- Spellings of words that appeared wrong in last week's writing.
- Key vocabulary from a topic they are learning at school.
- Capital cities, planets, or any fact they find genuinely interesting.
The three rules that make it stick
- Keep sessions short. Five to ten minutes, never more.
- Recall first, then check. The act of struggling to remember is what builds the memory.
- Celebrate the misses. A missed card is a card that just got more valuable, not a failure.
Pairing it with activity packs
Spaced repetition is great for facts, but kids also need to apply what they know. Use flashcards for the underlying knowledge, and use generated activity packs once or twice a week to put that knowledge to work in fresh contexts. The combination is far stronger than either on its own.
